A leading academic institute is urgently seeking a Histology Technician Scientific Support on an initial 3 month part time contract. The histology unit within this organisation provides an excellent experimental and post mortem diagnostic service receiving approximately 3000 samples per year. The laboratory is equipped with modern tissue processors, automated immuno-staining machines, enabling us to analyse experimental and human specimens. The post holder will be responsible for providing specialist technical support to the core Histology service delivering a high quality service under the direction of the Histology Manager.

Job Responsibilities include;

To provide specialist technical support to the core Histology service ensuring all experimental animal and human diagnostic samples requiring histology, are prepared to a high standard, ready for analysis and interpretation by senior staff and for publication figures
Sectioning of paraffin (90%) and cryostat (10%) of samples, experimental and occasionally human diagnostic post mortem samples
Titration of novel antibodies to create working protocols for various projects. Some of these protocols may be adapted for immuno-fluorescent staining
Processing of fixed tissue samples in the category III containment laboratory
Maintaining accurate records and paying meticulous attention to detail required at all times
Understanding Standard Operating Procedures and Risk COSHH Assessments for the histology laboratory and histology within the category III containment laboratory
Helping to train new staff and students on the fundamentals of histology techniques as well as training in the use of all specialist equipment within the histology laboratory and category III containment laboratory
Trouble-shoot equipment faults and errors, liaising with suppliers and technical specialists when required
Be competent in data handling when using in house databases and finance systems

Candidate Requirements include;

  • Eligible to live and work in the United Kingdom
  • Must have prior experience with the cutting of Paraffin blocks/sample
  • A background/ degree in Histology is highly advantageous
  • Must have experience working with very delicate and small samples
  • Individual must be able to start by the end of August 2021
